Tagset Glossary

Below is a glossary outlining in broad (and subjective!) terms what each tag means, so that people are generally on the same page about requesting and offering them. There will definitely be grey areas, so please comment below if you are unsure which one your request falls under. That said, please note that freeform tags are optional. If you don't see one here for what you want, or if your prompt straddles different tags, you don't actually need to worry about it.

The tags will be listed alphabetically in the sign-up form, but I broke them out into groups for the purpose of the glossary. I can also edit this post based on any discussion so that by the time sign-ups open, it's final.

Places/Settings
Archenland: stories set in Archenland or predominantly starring Archenlandian characters, at any time (Aravis counts)
Calormen: stories set in Calormen or predominantly starring Calormene characters, at any time (Aravis counts)
Life Underground: anything set below the Sunlit Lands and/or about its inhabitants
Telmar: anything set in Telmar (could include stories about why they left to invade Narnia); for matching purposes can also include stories about what happened to the Telmarines who left after Prince Caspian, or even how they originally got to Telmar from the South Seas
Setting: England: stories set anywhere and at any time in our world (doesn’t necessarily need to be England); can include ‘Everybody Lives’ scenarios in which the train crash never happened

Narnian World Time Periods
We used the breakouts on the Narnia Wiki. While the periods are defined by what happened in the country of Narnia, stories for these tags can take place anywhere in that world.
Age of Conquest: Birth of Narnia through right before White Witch seizes power
Age of Winter: White Witch’s reign
Golden Age: Pevensies’ reign
Dark Age: Narnia in anarchy
Telmarine Age: Telmarine conquest through right before Caspian X’s coronation
Age of Exploration: Caspian X’s reign (ie. through the last pages of Silver Chair)
Later Ages: Rilian’s reign onwards

Themes
Non-Canon Dimension Travel: stories that play around with the mechanics of inter-dimensional travel (ex. further exploration of the Wood; how or why things like the rings, painting and horn work) or that send characters on world-hopping adventures not covered by the books
The Problem of Susan: defined as you wish
Time Shenanigans: stories that play around with the mechanics of the time lapse/aging issues associated with dimension travel
Narnians In England: stories about Narnian-world natives visiting our world (doesn’t necessarily have to be England)

Genres
Alternate Universe – Canon Divergence: Characters exist in the canon world(s), but something goes differently; someone made a different decision, the villain won, someone was evil, summer never came, etc. This could mean a story about the moment of divergence itself, or anything set after that point/in that "universe." Use the details/prompt to explain the kinds of divergences you’re interested in seeing explored.
Alternate Universe – Different Setting: Characters have always existed in a different scenario (various historical eras, various professions, etc.), but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a mundane, single-world scenario. Use the details/prompts to explain what you’re looking for.
Backstory: Could be for a character or place or concept, to be explained in the details/prompt
Missing Scene: Filling in an episode potentially implied but not made explicit by canon
Worldbuilding: Open-ended, to cover places, eras, concepts, little-known characters, etc. not covered by other tags

Updates!

Hello everyone! Work on the tagset is finally complete. aurilly will be posting an update, with a glossary, so you'll know what tags you're choosing when you sign up.

I was going to open signups this morning, but instead will do that tonight, after you all have had a chance to look at the tags and ask any questions.

I will also be posting a beta signup post, and a pinch-hitter sign up post, here in the comm, so don't forget about those.

Thanks for all your patience as we've worked out a few kinks, and thanks especially to aurilly for her work in whipping the tags into shape.

NFE 2014 Tagset

As promised, this is the post to clarify some of the nominations. We’re trying to arrive at a final tagset of freeform tags that are broad enough to be requestable(?) by multiple people for multiple characters/prompts, but specific enough that people are happy. The more tags we have, and the more specific they are, the harder matching will be. We also want to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding what the tags mean; this will make people more comfortable offering them, and thus, more likely to match on them. Please note that some of the currently approved nominations may not end up in the final tagset, and, depending on the answers here, we may revise the wording of some nominations or consolidate them. We’ll put a glossary of any potentially confusing tags in the post that lets everyone know sign-ups are open. Please remember that your prompt will still be written out in the optional details; the tag doesn't need to encompass it.

We'll add to this post as more nominations are made.

Nominations We’re Asking to Revise
Bacchus/anyone: If you nominated this and have space in your character nomination slots, would you please delete this and nominate “Bacchus (Narnia)” in the character field instead? You can request Bacchus as a character and say in the details that you ship him with anyone your writer chooses. If you don’t have space, let us know and we’ll nominate him as a character for you.

Questions
These are questions for people who nominated certain tags. Depending on the answers here, we may revise the wording of the nominations, or consolidate them.

Tisroc: If you nominated this, did you have a specific Tisroc in mind? I’m assuming you mean the Tisroc from The Horse & His Boy, but just want to confirm that you weren’t thinking of a world-building story about Tisrocs in general.

Spare Oom: If you nominated this, what were you thinking a story for this tag should entail? It is what Mr. Tumnus calls England, but how would you characterize a 'Spare Oom' story?

The Missing Years (pre-crash): I’m assuming this means life in England after the Pevensies were expelled from Narnia but before the events of The Last Battle, but just wanted to be sure. Would this only mean a story set in England, or could it also mean a story between Rilian’s reign and Tirian’s? Could it also mean a story set in England that ignores The Last Battle and pretends everyone lived on in our world? What if we had a tag called “Post-Narnia Life In England”, and used this to encompass both 'the missing years' and an 'Everybody Lives' scenario that ignores the train crash? The optional details are where you could let your writer know your preference; I'm pretty sure someone offering the more meta tag would be open to either sub-period.

Telmar and Telmarine Era: Did the same person nominate these? What if we consolidated these into a single tag called “Telmarines” that encompasses a) what happened on the island of Telmar, b) the Narnian era over which the Telmarines ruled, c) stories about minor characters such as Glozelle and d) what happened to the Telmarines after Prince Caspian. That way, people can offer “Telmarines” and you can specify in the optional details which kind of story you’re looking for. Again, I think people offering this tag would be interested in most of these sub-options (but I might be wrong).

Alternate Universe: Am thinking of having two broad Alternate Universe tags: a) “Alternate Universe – Canon Divergence” b) “Alternate Universe – Different Setting” and leaving the details for the specifics. The first would allow people to request a specific change in canon and an exploration of how this would affect other stuff. The second would allow people to request a specific Alternate Universe setting (ex. Historical, coffee shop, etc.).

The Wood Between the Worlds: (in full disclosure, this is my nomination) I want this to be about the mechanics of world-hopping, or maybe stories where characters world-hop to places other than Narnia; it doesn’t necessarily have to involve the Wood or the rings. If anyone has a better idea of how to succinctly describe this, I’d really appreciate it.

’time wonkiness’/’the usual muddle about times’: Another one where suggestions are welcome for how to describe a story that plays with the concepts of weird time passage and (de)aging that happen when people travel between worlds.

THANK YOU!

Nominations update

Hi folks! We're waiting to hear back from AO3 on a tagging question, so for the time, the nominations are still open.

Also, I am thinking for clarity with the tags, we'll probably make it one fandom, as opposed to books/movies each as their own. You can use the optional details to clarify if you want bookverse or movieverse.

I think that's it for now. Any questions, let me know!

NFE 2014

Hello everyone! Tag nominations are still open, but will be closing soon. aurilly has graciously volunteered to help me with the tags, and she'll be making a post with tags we have questions about, so we can try to clean some up. So please keep your eyes open for that, and if you haven't submitted your nominations, don't forget!

NFE 2014

1) My apologies for running late with this. Real life has been playing havoc with my online one, I'm sorry.

2) As requested by several people, we are having a nominations period. Nominations are currently open, and you can go here to nominate characters and relationships.

I know some people are more interested in world-building, so I think it'll work if you nominate "world-building" as a character. That way, when signups are open, people can both request and offer it.

3) Here are the important dates for the exchange:

Signups open: July 25th
Signups close: August 1st
Assignments sent out: by August 4th
Fics due: anytime before September 13th
Collection opens: September 20th
Authors revealed: September 27th

These are pretty firm right now. It worked out really well last time for everyone to have more than a month of writing time, so that's back. The collection will open on September 20th, as long as everyone has a story (if we're waiting on pinch-hitters, it will be later than the posted time).

4) We can have a madness round again, if people would like! I'll open up all the prompts after the assignment deadline, so that week before reveal can be madness time.

5) Obviously the exchange will not be double-blind this year, you will know who you are writing for. If people want to write "Dear NFE Writer" letters and post them on LJ/Dreamwidth/Tumblr/wherever, that is fine, but not mandatory! You can put everything you want in your signup, if you like.

6) I've fine tuned the signup form, and the test matching was helpful, so I think we're all set there! *fingers crossed*

In the past, you've been allowed to request crossovers, and fic set in other people's fanverses. You can still do that, but those will have to go in the optional details part of the signup.

There will also be a box in the offer part of the signup where you, as a writer, can talk about what you like to write, and also put ONE OR TWO dealbreakers of what you can't write (for example, "no incest and I hate Edmund Pevensie"). Bear in mind that it would be extremely unusual in this exchange for you to say, "I can't write slash" and then get matched to someone who only requests slash. Most participants offer several options of what they want, and I don't see this changing.

Okay, I think that's it for now. Go forth, nominate, and ask any questions you have and I will try to answer them! You can email at narniaficexchange@gmail.com too.

NFE planning

Hi folks! Just wanted to let you know there's going to be an exchange this year - I am just off to a particularly late start.

I am hoping to do the entire exchange on AO3 this year, so if you don't have an account there yet, now is a good time to sign up. If you need an invitation, let me know, I have some codes.

The only thing left to do is test the signups. I've always handmatched the participants before, but with AO3, I have the chance to do automated matching. I'm not sure how well this will work, since we're kind of a detail-heavy exchange, so I want to test it, based primarily on fandom (book, movie) and characters (there's a list of 19 so far, if you want to add others, let me know) matching. There's a field for details, and also a field where you can link to your journal, tumblr, etc, if you want to post more for your writer.

I AM NOT SURE HOW WELL THIS IS GOING TO WORK, and I might end up doing handmatching in the end, since it's a small enough exchange for that. But I want to test the signups, and that's where you come in! If you can just go here and signup (link will be on your left), I can do a test matching run and see what problems might come up.

Please let me know if/how it works for you, and any suggestions/comments/questions you have! That's on everything - let me know if the rules are clear, if you need clarification on anything, etc.

THIS IS NOT YOUR OFFICIAL SIGN-UP! THIS IS JUST A TEST! All signups will be deleted and you will have to signup again when the NFE officially opens.

Thanks for all your help!

Madness!

It's open, right here!

This story is a gift for tonzura123, who didn't have an AO3 account.

In a week, I'll reveal the writers, but other than that, that's it for the NFE this year, friends. See you next spring!

Madness Round Info

Hey folks! I know you're hard at work on your Madness Stories, but I just wanted to give a few guidelines, since I know some people had questions.

1) You are uploading the story yourself to the AO3. If you do not have an AO3 account, let me know, and I will give you a code to create one. If you have never uploaded a story to a collection before, here is a tutorial that should be helpful.

2) You do not have to use the header that we used for the NFE stories here on LJ. Use the warnings on AO3 if necessary, and any additional tags that you think are appropriate (such as fandom, characters, and other freeform tags like "angst" or "fluff").

3) Please keep the prompt you are writing for attached to the story. You can post it in the Notes - I suggest at the end of the story, but if you prefer the beginning, that is fine too. No need to keep the "What I definitely don't want in my fic" section.

4) You can upload your finished stories any time before October 9th. October 9th is when the collection will open for reading/reviewing. If I've done everything right, the stories will not be available to read until Oct 9th. Let's hope! ;)

5) If you have an AO3 account, please reply to this comment to let the people writing for you know your AO3 name, so they can gift the fic to you.

6) Writers, if you have written a fic for someone who does not have an AO3 account, you can still upload it to the collection and gift it to Nfe_gremlin, and put in the notes who it is actually a gift for.

I think that should cover it! But if there's anything I've missed, or you have any other questions, ask here in the comments or email me at narniaficexchage@gmail.com

I strongly suggest making your account now, since the entire NFE will be run on AO3 next year. Also, if people want to write an additional story for your prompt, they'll need a user name to gift it to! :)

Comfort Me With Apples for thedreamisreal

Title: Comfort Me With Apples

Summary: After his time with the Witch, Edmund loses his taste for sweets, but he learns to love apples. Character study, and cookery lesson!

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want:
My favorite characters are the Pevensies, Caspian, Eustace Scrubb, Jill Pole, Professor Kirke, and Aslan. I'd like a fic set either during the Golden Age, the time in between trips to Narnia, or during the time right before the Pevensies died and went to Narnia in the last battle. I'm okay with incest, but it does not have to be included. (Any combination works for me.) A fic from Susan, Jill, Edmund or Eustace third person PoV would be great. I also like Caspian/Peter and Caspian/Susan. I'd love a focus on a family dynamic, whether blood or Narnian family. I'm ok with angst, but only if the ending is at least implied to be happy or bittersweet. Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons to read fics about. I love music and love reading about characters playing a musical instrument. Explicit sex is fine, but I don't want a PWP.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
1) "I can already tell you think I'm the dragon, that would be so like me, but I'm not. I'm not the dragon. I'm not the princess either." - Richard Siken

2) "And if you look at your reflection, is it all you want to be?" - Nine Inch Nails

Admin: NFE 2013 wrapping up, and NFE Madness!

Narnia Fic Exchange 2013 Update:

Hey folks! We'll be done with the NFE 2013 tonight, when the last story is posted. Tomorrow I will post the masterlist of all the stories, with the authors' names attached.

It's been a great round this year and the stories have been fabulous! Please remember to leave feedback for the author of your story. I know everyone worked hard on their fics and will appreciate your thanks!

***********

NFE Madness Update:

I was also going to open the community to Madness posting tomorrow, but due to a combination of factors, I am going to hold off on that for one more week, and Madness won't open until October 9th. So that means you get an extra week to work on your Madness stories! \o/ (and I get some time to attach the requesters' names to prompts!)

Also, there is another change to Madness and this is a big one: we will not be posting the stories here at the comm on LJ. Instead, you will be posting them to the Madness Collection on Ao3.

The major reason for this change:

It's in anticipation of moving the Narnia Fic Exchange to AO3 next year entirely. This will give people unfamiliar with the archive some practice in posting to it.

So that changes the rules a bit, as seen in this post here. The new rules are found on the Profile Page of the Collection on AO3 (as linked above) and behind this cut...Collapse )

If you don't have an account at AO3, you will need a code to create one. I have codes for people, so please either comment here, or send me an email, and I will send one to you. Remember, you will need an account to participate next year, so might as well create one now! :)

If you haven't posted to AO3 before, here is a tutorial that will help you post to a collection, like NFE Madness.

The one problem you might run into in posting is that you may have written a gift story for a person who doesn't have an AO3 account. I'm not sure how that will work in posting, but if it's a problem, you can gift Nfe_gremlin with the story, and use the Notes field to indicate the person the story really is for.

Hopefully that coves everything, but I might have left something out. If you have any questions, please comment here or email me at narniaficexchange@gmail.com!

ETA: If you sign up for an AO3 account, or already have one, reply to this comment with your AO3 username, so if someone writes you a story, they'll know who to gift it to.

Rillian and/or Edmund recovering from Jadis/The Lady of the Green Kirtle.

Summary: Star showers have always boded well for Narnia’s future. An AU of the Last Battle.
Author’s Note: Thank you so much to my betas, [redacted] and [redacted]!

A Song for the StarsCollapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I'd love anything with Eustace and Jill (either romantic or non-romantic). Eustace and his mother after VDT or SC, Eustace and his father after VDT or SC. Another lovely thing would be a short AU (or long if you're up to it!) set in Narnia where the last battle doesn't end the world. Also, in my own head-canon Susan takes up playing the violin in our world. It would be awesome to see something centering around or including that. Have fun and pick whatever jumps out at you :D

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: If it's a Eustace and Jill fic, it would be fun if they learned sign language together.

Light To The Misled and Lonely Traveler for wingedflight21

Title: Light To The Misled and Lonely Traveler
Author: rthstewart
Recipient: wingedflight21
Rating: K+/PG
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Crackfic! Cross-over madness. No warnings; minor plot and character spoilers for the following: Voyage of the Dawn Treader ; Artemis Fowl series; Thursday Next series; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; BBC’s Merlin Series 3-4; Series 4, Doctor Who (10th Doctor and Donna Noble); Warehouse 13 (minor plot hints from The Big Snag and The Sky’s The Limit); The Hobbit (film 2012; character spoilers); The Lord of the Rings (book). (Also there are nods to Struthious’ Oi, None of Your, a Donna Noble AU and another favorite Narnia fic).

Title is taken from John Milton, “The stars, that nature hung in heaven, and filled their lamps with everlasting oil, give due light to the misled and lonely traveler.”

Summary: From The Time and Space Traveler’s Guide, Entry for Coriakin’s Island, V 2.0:
Should your journey to or from Aslan’s Country (excellent food and top notch accommodation – see entry for Aslan’s Country above) or the Sweet Sea (delicious but be sure to brush your teeth after partaking to prevent decay!) take you through the Eastern Sea, you will find there are few places in the archipelagos worth the bother of leaving the time stream. No establishments offer notable refreshment, sights, or entertainment. Some of the Islands are very dangerous whilst offering no commensurate excitement and are best avoided entirely. (See entries for Dark Island, Lone Islands, Deathwater below). As for Coriakin’s Island, do not be lulled by the prospect of the pleasant greenery, homely house, and fine, sandy and pristine beaches. The magician who lives there is a cantankerous coot with a habit of giving uninvited guests extra appendages or turning them into a squid. AVOID.

Light To The Misled and Lonely Traveler…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

Just going to throw out some ideas (but I'm pretty easy-going so pretty much anything will make me happy):

Just what does Coriakin get up to on his island when he isn't entertaining travelling visitors? Is he a magician because stars have magic or are the two unrelated? Does he know Ramandu and his daughter (and do they ever get together for tea)?

Susan and Eustace are both very concerned with logic and common sense - does this mean they got along fairly well even before their Narnian adventures? Or were they always at odds? Would this change after their respective adventures?

How often did the Friends of Narnia have dinner parties? Was it always just those we saw in LB attending? Did Susan ever come? Did they ever invite anyone else?

I love AUs, especially dark ones. What if the the Dawn Treader crew got shipwrecked? Could Tirian have had ulterior motives in LB? How would the Pevensie parents have reacted if their kids returned as adults -- or if they didn't return at all?

I also adore crossovers so, while I know this one's a long stretch, it would be super cool to see a crossover with either the Swallows and Amazons series or the Thursday Next series (specifically Friday and Edmund's interactions).

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: Susan and Edmund are my favorites, so I'd love a fic centered on them! Something about their adventures in Tashbaan or their escape from the city, maybe. Or another Golden Age adventure of some kind. England fic is good too though, I'm not terribly picky. I love to see a lot of banter between them, or something that focuses on their similarities. (If you're familiar with rthstewart's TSG-verse, a fic with Susan, Edmund and Tebbitt would make my year, especially one where Ed is just casually protective enough to scare the pants off Tebbitt and Susan is annoyed by their bickering.)

If Ed and Sue aren't your favorites, I also love Cor/Aravis, again for the bantering possibilities! They're a lot of fun and I'd love anything that extends their story further.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:

Once Upon a Diplomatic Mission for ruanchunxian0

Title: Once Upon a Diplomatic Mission
Author: tiabolt
Recipient: ruanchunxian0
Rating: T
Content/Warnings: Nothing more dangerous than a bit of light flirting.
Summary: And once again, the four monarchs are left wondering where in the world do these odd people come from? And why must they constantly be after Narnia, instead of, say, Calormen?
Author's notes: Damoiseau is french for the male equivalent of a damsel.

Once Upon a Diplomatic Mission…Collapse )

Prompt: What I want: Not too much angst; some humour, snark; happy ending; Pevensies, Narnia; minimal romance
Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
(Feel free to pick and choose)
- I've been looking for a good crossover with Once Upon a Time and haven't managed to find any, so would love to see some. Prompts: 1) Peter and/or Edmund, and Prince Charming, on kingship/ruling/being commoner-turned-royal; 2) Lucy and Red Riding Hood, running with wolves; 3) Snow White and Susan, archery ; 4) any character from both universes, curses, destiny, waiting for a saviour/being saviour; 5) or just run with the crossover and do whatever you want
- Even if you don't want to write a crossover, feel free to use any part of those prompts for just Narnia instead
- "Edmund was engaged in long overdue shuttling diplomacy…to assure all that […] Narnia had no intention of turning other heads of state into barnyard animals" – rthstewart, Lost in Translation. I would love to see a fic elaborating the diplomatic issues that would arise after the incident of Rabadash the Ass.
- Golden Age/AU where they don't leave: Pevensies being badass and awesome monarchs
- Pevensies from outsider point of view
- World-building in Narnia and/or the world beyond

Into Something Rich and Strange for snacky

Title: Into Something Rich and Strange
Author: edenfalling / Elizabeth Culmer
Recipient: snacky
Rating: G
Content/Warnings: Nothing major, but this might not be the best story to read if you are claustrophobic or particularly afraid of either drowning or the dark.
Summary: "The siren is a creature of reflections, born of lightning on the winter sea," the mer-woman said, her tail fins twitching in signs Susan had no skill to read. "Cold and light feed its power and no being born of the sea can gainsay its command, though we who are female can at the least resist its lure. You are a Daughter of Eve, born of dreams and flesh. Your power comes from the warmth of blood and the darkness of the beating heart; the siren has no strength against that magic. You must close your eyes and dream the enemy into the final dark."
Author's Notes: I tried to combine a story about Susan fixing things and an ocean story about the merpeople; hopefully I have succeeded. My heartfelt thanks to [redacted] for her awesome beta-reading, without which the story would be much shallower.

Into Something Rich and Strange…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want:
Any of these, take your pick or mix and match:
• stories about Caspian during his reign - fighting the giants, rebuilding Cair Paravel, settling in Narnia with Ramandu's Daughter, anything!
• stories about Susan during the Golden Age - what lead her to Calormene in HHB? She never rode to wars, so what was her role during them? Her role in the politics of Narnia maybe? A story where everything has gone wrong, and it must be fixed, and she is the one to do it.
• ocean travel stories - they don't have to be on the Dawn Treader! Maybe a story about the merpeople!
• Travel stories of all kinds - I love seeing characters (the Pevensies during their reign) exploring outside of Narnia, or maybe finding their way between worlds?
• For shipping, I love Caspian/Peter, and I like Peter/Susan, but if that's not your thing, no worries.
• I also love post-Narnia stories about Susan - what direction did her life take her after the events of the The Last Battle? But nothing tragic, I don't want her wishing she'd died.
• I like AUs of all kinds! And I like certain crossovers - LOTR or Game of Thrones; or if you're writing an England story, maybe a crossover with the books "The Montmaray Journals" or "Code Name Verity", if you're familiar with those fandoms. But please no crossovers with Doctor Who or Sherlock or Supernatural.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: Banter, laughter, fun, horses, found family, and deep connections.

Rating: K+
Content/Warnings: None
Summary: A knight finds atonement while adrift at sea.

What You Might Have Been…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I think I'd like Golden Age fic, as I'm currently revelling in HHB, the only book where the Pevensies are really adult monarchs. I'm game for any kind of fic inspired by that book, whether character-based, or plot-based.

I love, love, love world-building type fics, whether you choose to explore this with something immersed in Calormen and the Tisroc's court, or with some sort of flashback comparing the nature of monarchy and empire and foreign relations in England and Narnia. I'm also fascinated by the Aravis/Cor relationship (cross-cultural romances are always frustratingly fantastic!), the brotherly interactions between Cor and Corin, delving into Susan's state of mind...anything at all, really, that's in some random way inspired by HHB.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:

Go ahead and use these to inspire you in any way possible. Even if there's only a squint-and-you-can-see-it reference to any one of these prompt quotes, I'll be perfectly happy.

"I used to think that the interesting issue was whether we should have a monarchy or not. But now I think that question is rather like, should we have pandas or not? Our current royal family doesn't have the difficulties in breeding that pandas do, but pandas and royal persons alike are expensive to conserve and ill-adapted to any modern environment. But aren't they interesting? Aren't they nice to look at? Some people find them endearing; some pity them for their precarious situation; everybody stares at them, and however airy the enclosure they inhabit, it's still a cage...Is monarchy a suitable institution for a grown-up nation? I don't know." -- Royal Bodies, by Hilary Mantel

"It is never too late to be what you might have been." -- George Eliot

"Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer." -- Rainer Maria Rilke

Fast is Falling…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want: I'm always curious about the books and literature in fantasy worlds. I'd be interested to see your take on some kind of Narnian writing - a few pages from a history, or a cook book, or a racy romantic novel, or somebody's memoir... anything! If that doesn't appeal, I'm really into worldbuilding so it would be great to see something about parts of Narnia we don't get to see much of, or maybe something about the behind-the-scenes stuff (servants in one of the royal palaces? Random sailors or soldiers?) instead of focusing on the books' main characters. Just throwing ideas around now so I'll shut up, but basically I'd love to read anything about Narnia as a country and society, good or bad. I'm less interested in shippy stuff but totally happy for that to be a part of it if you like.

Content/Warnings: None
Summary: Peter and Susan use their diverse skills to mentor a young elf who is a new ambassador. This gives them both a chance to show the importance of their differences. Set during the Golden Age when they’ve learned how best to rule together.
Author’s Note: My prompt asked for a character study of Peter and Susan and mentioned contrasting their fighting styles. From there I had the idea of how they approach the world differently through the lens of archery and swordsmanship and it grew from there. I hope you like it. Thank you to dodger_sister for betaing.

I Know it in My Memory for aurilly

Title: I Know it in My Memory
Author: vialethe
Recipient: aurilly
Rating: G
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Implied Susan/Edmund
Summary: He can't hold onto her any more in England than he ever could in Narnia, no matter how he tries; still, they've never given up on each other yet.

I Know it in My Memory…Collapse )

What I want: I like stories that include: friendship, adventures, banter, daring stratagems, painting/sculpture/art, in vino veritas, fish out of water, the Wood Between the Worlds, and/or at least one chuckle. I prefer casual romance that develops out of friendship over angsty epic one true love; I like gen friendship stories just as much as romance. I love Edmund and Tirian the most, but everyone else, too.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
1. Last Battle AU-ish. Instead of it being only a vision, Tirian is actually transported to the Friends of Narnia dinner and spends time in England. I ship Tirian/Jill, Eustace/Jill or Tirian/Susan, but ensemble gen would be just as wonderful.

2. Edmund & Tumnus as close friends through the years, in a way that isn’t dependent on Lucy and Tumnus's dynamic.

3. Lucy & Edmund on an adventure, without their siblings. Perhaps their first ambassadorial visit, or stranded together somewhere, or solving a mystery, or using the rings, or a Silver Chair-like camping quest, or sharing an apartment, etc… Anything where they’re awesome best friends with complementary strengths. (I also love exquisitely ambiguous, the-only-reason-I’m-sure-it's-romantic-is-because-there's-a-pairing-tag-in-the-header, co-dependent yet effective Edmund/Susan, so feel free to do this duo instead.)

4. Crossovers (any het crossover pairing is welcome): a) Lost (but please not with a Jack or Ben focus); or b) Game of Thrones (I have not read the books, so please don't spoil me; my favorite protagonists/storylines are Tyrion/Sansa-Bronn-Varys-Tyrells & Co in Kings Landing, Jamie/Brienne, Sam, Bran & Co)

Summary: Four moments from the first year of the Golden Age.
Author's note: Sorry I didn't give you much Tumnus, but I hope these early portraits fit the bill!

Four Beginnings...Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I'd love some Golden Age adventures. Tumnus is my favorite character and I've love to see what life was like as the Pevensies were learning how to be monarchs. Character interactions especially in terms of friendships and created families are what I love. How does Tumnus fit into the royal family as its clear he does. Show me some of the bumps along the way. If not Tumnus then just how did they figure out how to be monarchs. If you can write complex politics in Narnia, you'll have me hooked as I find them interesting but can't write them. I love slice of life, snapshots, those moments when everything changed. I don't look for Narnia for ships but crushes and smaller romances are of interest to me, just not incest. Its a world I just want to get to know better as I feel like there was never enough of it.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: Created families are just as important as those we're born with.

Summary: In which a Prince of Archenland performs a great feat and a Tarkheena learns that family is not merely flesh and blood.
Author's Notes: Many, many thanks to my beta for helping me with this story!

Ex Amicitia Familia...Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I love character-driven fic and would be quite happy to receive gen fic but pairings are great too. I haven't watched the movies, so bookverse only please.

I would love to read something about Jadis. Perhaps she met Aslan at other times, before the Long Winter? Perhaps there are Charnish legends about the Emperor-over-Sea, that she had always dismissed as old wives tales, but gave long thought to once she came to Narnia? What dealings does she have with the Tisroc? She must have been planning her invasion of Narnia for a long time, what were her plans? Did it all go smoothly?

I also love Aravis and would love to know what happens as she gets older in Archenland. Does she miss Calormene? Does she know about the origins of the Calormene empire and its link to Archenland? If so, what does she think about it? I think she and Cor must have had an interesting relationship as he grew into his princedom; feel free to tell me about it.

Also, anything about Polly Plummer would be amazing, or Queen Helen and King Frank in the first days of Narnia.

Even if you don't like these, do not despair! If you pick a somewhat obscure corner of the Narnia universe to explore, I will be delighted. Feel free to write fic from any of the books, especially The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew and The Silver Chair.

Summary: After the Last Battle, Susan picks up the pieces of her life and creates a new family, teaching her children about Narnia. What she never expected was a ghost to come calling.

Aslan's GiftCollapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: I never know what to say for these things so here are some things I enjoy!

-I much prefer bookverse to movieverse (but I really enjoyed Ramandu's Daughter getting some characterization as well)
-Ladies interest me much more than male characters
-I am always a fan of femslash (such as for example Lucy/Sea Girl or Lucy/Ramandu's Daughter)
-I like the idea of Susan as a spymistress more than I like Edmund the spymaster.
-I love stories about journeys and voyages and queens and the start of the Golden Age.

I love stories where Susan moves on after LB, and has friends and a life and pulls together a new family for herself, and integrates the best parts of her Narnian life without sacrificing her English self.

I love stories about Polly after Magician's Nephew--her magical adventures, her political shenanigans, her travels, her absurd letters home to Digory.

If you are feeling crossover-ish, I enjoy Doctor Who and Mary Poppins and Discworld and Supernatural.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
1) Either you had no purpose
Or the purpose is beyond the end you figured
And is altered in fulfilment. There are other places
Which also are the world's end, some at the sea jaws,
Or over a dark lake, in a desert or a city—
But this is the nearest, in place and time,
Now and in England.
-T.S. Eliot, Little Gidding, Four Quartets

2) Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know if by its seriousness.

Original Prompt that we sent you:
what i want:
Here are some ideas I would be interested in. Of course, feel free to write something entirely different.

-fic about the Telmarines who leave Narnia at the end of PC - what is their first encounter with people from our world like? perhaps they end up meeting one of the Pevensies in their world?

-political manoeuvring and hard reluctant decisions

-tensions among Narnians following loss of a common enemy (Telmarines, Jadis), or
during the conflict (because people are not necessarily very good at putting aside other issues even though technically on one side, and I don't see why Animals should be any different). Maybe some of them don't like that some inexperienced children have been set up as rulers of their country.

-one of the Pevensies questioning their ruling decisions afterwards (in England?) Perhaps the war against the giants which Peter is fighting in HHB was an imperialist one started by Narnia? The morality of this might be questionable during the decolonization debate.

-what do the Pevensies think about contemporary affairs because of their Narnian experiences?

-the experiences of someone in the Narnian world who doesn't worship Aslan, but is nevertheless a good being.
-Aslan as a rather dubious character

-I really enjoy reading Ana Mardoll's deconstructions ([link], so fic related to a point raised in one of them would certainly be welcome.

-perception of the Pevensies after their reigns (Telmarine/Tirian). I am very fond of fictional historical criticism.

-crossovers with Game of Thrones, The Tudors, or The Borgias (Pevensies and Borgias
both trying to outmanoeuvre each other?) would be very welcome, or historical people showing up.

I am perfectly fine with incest.

love is the strongest choice for crescent_gaia

Title: love is the strongest choice
Author: ladyairy
Recipient: crescent_gaia
Rating: G
Content/Warnings: Movieverse, some angst
Summary: Struggling with feelings for Caspian, Susan receives a little advice from her sister.

love is the strongest choice…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want: I know movie verse more than book verse, so I would like something along those lines. However, if you are only coming up with something that is from book 'verse, please feel free to write it.

Susan is my favorite character, followed closely by Lucy, so something centering on one of them or both would be great. I do like shipping Susan with Caspian and Lucy with Aslan if you were thinking of writing something along those lines.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
"I don't believe in fairy tales / But I believe in you and me" -- Wonderland, Natalia Kills

Both within the family and without, our sisters hold up our mirrors: our
images of who we are and of who we can dare to be. -- Elizabeth Fishel

Common Grounds for tantella/Avia Tantella Scott

Title: Common Grounds
Author: freudiancascade
Recipient: tantella/Avia Tantella Scott
Rating: K
Content/Warnings: None
Summary: In which climate change has unfortunate side-effects for Galma, a minor crisis ensues, and Peter learns about trade relations through trial and error.
Author's Notes: Much thanks goes to my betas [redacted 1, 2, & 3]! You ladies are lifesavers! Of course, any errors that still remain are entirely my own.

To my recipient; I hope this scratches your itch for world-building, because it was a lot of fun to finally string these headcanons together into a story! While I am definitely not an expert on Narnian climates, I have spent WAY too much time learning about coffee. As a result, I tried to find real-world geographic parallels to describe each region's beans. Calormen coffee is based off several African blends (taking the acidic bite of Kenyan blends and mellowing it with the smoothness of highland Ethiopian soil). Galman brews, in contrast, would likely taste more like Hawaiian-grown Kona coffee. It's also worth noting that the dwarfish coffee-tasting method that Lucy loves so much is based off a real thing, too: it bears a strong resemblance to how real coffeehouses sample new roasts!

Happy drinking!

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: Ultimately I would love it if you wrote something that made you really happy, perhaps that one-shot you've been tossing around but haven't committed to yet? I love any sort of worldbuilding... Tell me more about Galma, the Lone Islands, Calormen, Terebinthia, the Long Winter, the Telmarine oppression, Bism, backstories of any minor character... anything!

Mazy Rings, Troublesome Things…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want: stories of minor or unexplained canon characters: for example, the Hermit of the Southern March, Prunaprismia or Aunt Letty; women being awesome, in Narnia or Spare Oom (or both); Stories from the far corners (or lost history) of the Narnian world - like, what's south of Calormen or north of Harfang? What was happening fifty years after Caspian the Conqueror, or fifty years before?

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
“if Power and Command be the Thing which diʃtinguiʃh a Prince, theʃe Ruffians had all the marks of Royalty about them...” from A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates, 1724, p. 60

and the fallen stars do sing for edenfalling / Elizabeth Culmer

Title: and the fallen stars do sing
Author: animus_wyrmis
Recipient: edenfalling / Elizabeth Culmer
Rating: G
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: N/A
Summary: "I came directly to you, my lord," she said finally. "My sisters and I saw...oh, I can hardly say it! The kings and queens--they've--we've lost them!"

"I'm sorry," Peridan said, "I don't think I understand you. They're not lost; they've gone hunting. There's a large party, after the white stag..."

and the fallen stars do sing…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you:

What I want: To sum up, I want world-building and/or exciting adventures. If adventures, I would prefer the main characters NOT be Peter and Edmund, since they get more than their fair share of such plots. If world-building, there are nearly three thousand years of Narnian world history to play with, plus lots of places we see only in passing or never see at all. Go wild! (Heck, invent whole new worlds if you wish; the Wood canonically allows that option.)

For example:
1. Archenland during the Long Winter, or during the first years after Narnia's sudden reemergence from its magical bonds. They are sister countries, after all, and Archenland's royal family has a blood-right claim to the Narnia throne. Narnia's loss and recovery must have been wrenching changes. I'd love to see the initial reaction to the Winter, people trying to break down the magical barriers (whose existence I must assume to explain the ridiculous isolation evident in LWW), Lune and his wife meeting the Pevensies, etc.

2. What happened in Narnia in the years around the death of the Tree of Protection? Did Jadis kill it (by magic or by proxy), or did it just die of old age? How soon thereafter did she enter Narnia? Via subterfuge or via conquest? Who set up the resistance and how? (Also, who set up the black market the Beavers are clearly using, and how does it work?)

3. What led to the Telmarine invasion and conquest of Narnia? Aslan says it was a famine, but famine alone is unlikely to lead to the entirety of a settled people migrating to a new country; some must have stayed in Telmar. Was the migration a regional thing, or did families split down the middle? Was Caspian I royalty before the invasion or did he only rise to prominence in Narnia? How quickly (and why) did the Narnian Telmarines lose contact with their home country? That entire episode is crying out for exploration.

4. Susan and Lucy have an unexpected adventure, including two or more of the following elements: Ambushes! Captures! Daring escapes and rescues! Disguises, deceit, and diplomacy! Cunning plans! Expressions of love, faith, and trust in each other! Doomed last stands! Happy endings! Basically, you know those epic brotherly devotion/adventure fics? Write me one of those, but with sisters instead. Preferably in the Narnian world, but if you can find a way to play out something from that genre in England, that would be awesome too.

Please note that I am not trying to restrict you to those ideas! They are just some examples of what I mean by world-building and exciting adventures.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: "....for if you live you may yet have good fortune but all the dead are dead alike."

Swords. Knife-fights. Epic speeches before battles. Conversations about love wherein the word itself is never spoken but the sentiment is nonetheless clearly expressed and understood by both parties. Politics. Economics. Arguments. Magic.

"Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

Author’s Notes: Big THANK YOU to all the mods and helpers of this one-shot. And to the person who asked for this, because I've always wanted an excuse to write steampunk. I hope you won't mind that the first thing that came into mind was “steampunk air battle.”

Original prompt that we sent you:

What I want: Book-verse, preferably. Can be set in our world or in Narnia. AUs are fine.
Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: Choose from any below.
* Explorations of lesser known characters or places. For example, tell me about Drinian, Rhince or Peridan, or describe what Archenland is like beyond Anvard.
* What if the Pevensies weren't banned from returning to Narnia? How would events be different in VDT if the older Pevensies were there, or if any of the Four were sent to look for Rilian instead of Eustace and Jill?
* What happened to the Telmarines that left Narnia through the Door in the Air? Were they ever discovered by other people from our world?
* Intrigue, mystery or espionage in Narnia or in Spare Oom.

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want: character studies, backstory for minor characters, incidents implied in the books but not explicitly explored, Talking Animals being people while definitely not being human, adventures in worlds other than Narnia (have any Narnians crossed into other worlds?). I would prefer gen or bob to romance or porn. I like time travel stories, but I don't see that necessarily working with Narnia. I'm just kind of throwing things out. I'm sure I'll be happy with whatever I get.

The Undercover King, Part 2 for freudiancascade

Title: The Undercover King
Author: aurilly
Recipient: freudiancascade
Rating: PG
Content/Warnings: none
Summary: Tirian's half-baked scheme for espionage in Calormen gets a much-needed boost when Narnian hero Jill Pole shows up. Little do they know that the fate of the world---the prevention of the apocalypse itself---rests on their success (and also on the lumber tariffs). (pre-Last Battle AU)

Part 1

The Undercover King, Part 2…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you: I’m a sucker for narrative, and for the act of storytelling. How does one transform their experiences into the stuff of legend (and, at the same time, what kind of negotiation with the truth must occur in order to tell a good story?). Narnian mythology or history, perhaps? How about untold adventures, the exchange of letters, or maybe the Pevensies swapping tales to pass the time?

Alternately (or perhaps simultaneously), any adventure involving capable ladies in active roles will make me very, very happy!

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever:
“A Sort of a Song” - William Carlos Williams

Of Courtship, Chimneys, and Cordials for psyche29

Title: Of Courtship, Chimneys, and Cordials
Author: lauraandrews
Recipient: psyche29
Rating: K
Content/Warnings: None.
Summary: Susan leaves the castle to Peter, Edmund, and Lucy. Of course, things don't go quite as planned.
Author’s Notes:This is an extended Golden Age AU. Also, there is fluff.

Of Courtship, Chimneys, and Cordials…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you: I find I will read damn near anything, so long as it’s well written. I tend to prefer stories that use the Pevensies as main characters, and don't care too much if it's all of them or one of them or any combination of them. This is my first year here, so I am wide open to most anything, whether it's clean and sweet, dark and emotional, or even dirty porn. Or any combination thereof!! I'm not being helpful, am I? I tend to prefer happy over angsty, but again, well-written trumps everything. Romance is always welcome, though I'd be equally happy with simple sibling fic. Pairings I like include Eustace/Jill and Lucy/Tirian. Peter/anybody is always fun to read, as is Edmund/anybody. Peter and Edmund sibling fic trumps Susan and Lucy sibling fic. But definitely please use a Pevensie - more, if you wish! - in this fic. And Aslan is always welcome.

Always a King for rthstewart

Title: Always a King
Author: deepdarkwaters
Recipient: rthstewart
Rating: PG
Possible Spoilers/Warnings: Not sure if they count as spoilers, but fic assumes familiarity with The Chronicles of Narnia, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter.
Summary: There were wars the Pevensies fought in Narnia, and one in England that they couldn't.
Notes: I went for the crossover angle - not sure it's exactly what you intended, and the timelines are a bit all over the place, but really hope it works for you! Thanks to KG for the beta.

Always a King…Collapse )

Original Prompt that we sent you: What I want: Thank you for writing for me! I like lots of things and would be happy with lots of things. What I don't like is narrow but pretty strongly held.

I love adventure, fairy tales and pagan influences, politics, UST, humour, romance between co-equal partners, worldbuilding, culture clashes, clever dialogue, surprise endings and happy ever afters. I love to laugh. Because I love happy, surprise endings and laughing, I really enjoy stories where nobody dies on the train, or nobody leaves Narnia.

I love cross-overs (Calvin & Hobbes (Calvin & Hobbes in Narnia?!); classic Conan Doyle Holmes and Watson or Sherlock and Joan from the new CBS Elementary; Lord of the Rings/Hobbit; Avengers; Lloyd Alexander's Prydain; Bujold; Temeraire; Sara Jane Adventures; Harry Potter; Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Warehouse 13; Alice's Adventures; classic children's books like Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, etc.

Quotes/inspiration:

"I think God, in creating man, somewhat overestimated his ability." Oscar Wilde

"We all know interspecies romance is weird." Tim Burton

"Did someone just call me the wine dude?" he asked in a lazy drawl. "It's Bacchus, please. Or Mr. Bacchus. Or Lord Bacchus. Or, sometimes, Oh-My-Gods-Please-Don't-Kill-Me, Lord Bacchus." Rick Riordan

"I had weird dreams full of barnyard animals. Most of them wanted to kill me. The rest wanted food." Rick Riordan

Original Prompt that we sent you:
What I want: In LWW, Tumnus and Lucy have a second meeting while Edmund runs into the White Witch. I'd like to see what happened during their meeting: stories? conversation? music?

I have long had a dream of a noir-ish mystery set during the Long Winter with Maugrim and the Secret Police as the protagonists.

What kind of fairy tales do they have in Narnia? Maybe set during the Long Winter?

If none of these tickle your fancy or if you have a really great idea that you've been dying to write, just please write whatever makes you happy.

Prompt words/objects/quotes/whatever: *If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking. -- Buddhist Proverb
